Earlier today, students at Metcalfe School in Milwaukee received a special gift to start the school year: a brand new backpack filled with school supplies. The backpacks and supplies were purchased with funds raised through the Backpack Buddies program, sponsored by Sendik’s Food Markets, FOX6 and Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin. The money was raised during the month of August through sales of Backpack Buddies at all 11 Balistreri owned and operated Sendik’s.
Margaret Harris, Sendik’s family co-owner, assisted MPS Superintendent Dr. Gregory Thornton and Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin President Bonnie Bellehumeur in the distribution.
“Lifelong learning starts with a strong foundation in elementary school,” said Bellehumeur. “We hope these backpacks will give children the tools to help build a strong educational foundation for a successful school year.”
The Backpack Buddies program aims to break the cycle of poverty by providing at-risk children with the items they need to be successful in school. The program is one of many events at Sendik’s this fall in support of Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin. One of the more popular events is the “Keep the Change” promotion where customers can round up their total to the nearest dollar, with the change benefiting the local non-profit. The proceeds from sales of Sendik’s Real Food magazine are also donated to the charity. The magazines are available through October.
“Once again, Sendik’s Food Market is proud to partner with Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin to provide Wisconsin children with backpacks,” said Margaret Harris, Sendik’s family co-owner Margaret Harris. “Our teams have worked hard selling Backpack Buddies knowing that their efforts will help families like their own provide the school supplies children need to have a successful school year.”Featured, General, News | September 13th, 2013
