With today’s delivery to Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin of 61,000 pounds of food and more than $38,000, Sendik’s customers have now donated more than one million meals to the local food bank. For the past six years, the family owned grocer has partnered with Feeding America during the fall months in the fight against hunger. In the months of August, September and October, customers purchased Mac & Cheese, rounded up their totals and scooped up Backpack Buddies to help feed the hungry throughout Eastern Wisconsin.
“Every year we are amazed by the customer support for this program,” said Ted Balistreri, one of the family co-owners of Sendik’s. “Because of their generous donations, fewer people will go hungry in our community. We’re very proud to contribute to this donation and thank Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin for their incredible work fighting hunger.”
Ted and fellow Sendik’s representatives met the two semi-truck loads of food at the Feeding America warehouse this morning and visited with Feeding America employees, thanking them for their work. The need continues to be great in the greater Milwaukee community. In the last two years, the charity has experienced a 31% increase in the demand for food. In fact, Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin distributed a record 20 million pounds of food last year. As families continue to feel the lasting effects of the recession, many are visiting their local food pantry or meal program for the first time to help fill the food gap.
“Our partnership with Sendik’s provides much needed food for hungry children, families and seniors right here in our communities,” said Bonnie Bellehumeur, president of Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin. “This donation will help us provide hope in the form of hunger relief to our neighbors just in time for the holidays.”Featured, General, News | November 21st, 2013
