Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, Sendik’s customers delivered the gift of food to help feed Milwaukee’s hungry. More than 51,000 pounds of food — nearly two semi trucks worth — was delivered to Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin on Monday morning. Funds to purchase the non-perishable products were raised during the months of August, September and October, thanks to amazing support from Sendik’s customers.
“I can’t tell you how generous our customers have been,” said Ted Balistreri, who owns Sendik’s, along with brothers Patrick and Nick, and sister Margaret Harris. “It is phenomenal. We’re a family business, and this is families helping feed other families in our communities.”
Ted Balistreri and Margaret Harris visited Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin’s warehouse Monday to both witness the delivery and present a check for $44,750 to the local food bank. The monetary funds were also raised by Sendik’s customers, who purchased Sendik’s Real Food magazines, rounded up their totals, purchased Mac & Cheese and donated bags of groceries, all in support of the grocer’s quarterly charity partner.
The donation was welcomed by Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin President Bonnie Bellehumeur. “The support from Sendik’s provides much needed food assistance for families who continue to feel the lasting effects of the recession,” she said. “This donation will help us meet the increased need for emergency food relief especially during the holiday season.”
This is the fifth year that Sendik’s has partnered with Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, making the fundraising events and promotions a fall tradition for customers.
“We’re continually amazed by our customers,” said Ted Balistreri. “They understand how important their support is to the hungry of our community, and they give generously. We are honored to make this donation on their behalf.”
