Continuing its ongoing support of local charities, Sendik’s Food Markets recently concluded it’s spring quarterly fundraising efforts with a $51,100 donation to ABCD: After Breast Cancer Diagnosis. The donation was collected through a variety of in-store activities during the month’s of February, March and April, including the sale of the spring issue of Sendik’s Real Food Magazine.

A presentation of this year’s donation will take place prior to Wednesday’s game between the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers when Margaret Harris, who owns Sendik’s, along with brothers Ted, Patrick and Nick Balistreri, will present a check to ABCD representatives Elizabeth “Betsy” Brenner, president, and Ginny Finn, executive director.

Founded in 1999 by Melodie Wilson, ABCD continues to grow, providing free personalized one-to-one support to people affected by breast cancer throughout Wisconsin. Sendik’s reminded customers of this one-to-one method through unique in-store promotions, including selling pedometers, a reminder that ABCD is involved in ‘every step’ of the cancer journey. Additional funds were raised by selling chocolate candy hearts around Valentine’s Day and donating a portion of proceeds  from select ice cream purchases.

“Our family and our Sendik’s associates are always happy to be able to support ABCD,” said Margaret Harris. “The impact of a breast cancer diagnosis is lessened when you are able to share it with the one-on-one mentor provided by ABCD. They have the resources and the compassion to step in when they are most needed. We are proud to provide awareness and assistance to such a wonderful Wisconsin organization.”

Support for ABCD’s work has been a part of Sendik’s since 2006 and involves direct corporate support and contributions from Sendik’s loyal customers.  This year’s gift will be used to assure the quality and continuing growth of free support services for patients, family and friends affected by breast cancer.
