This morning, students at Thurston Woods School in Milwaukee received backpacks filled with school supplies as part of the Backpack Buddies program sponsored by Sendik’s Food Markets, FOX6 and Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin. Funds to purchase the backpacks were raised during the month of August through sales of Backpack Buddies at all 10 Balistreri owned and operated Sendik’s.
Margaret Harris, who owns Sendik’s, along with brothers Ted, Patrick and Nick Balistreri, assisted MPS Superintendent Dr. Gregory Thorton and Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin President Bonnie Bellehumeur in the distribution.
“Lifelong learning starts with a strong foundation in elementary school,” said Bellehumeur. “We hope these backpacks will give children the tools to help build a strong educational foundation for a successful school year.”
The Backpack Buddies program aims to break the cycle of poverty by providing at-risk children with a backpack filled with school supplies. The program is one of many events at Sendik’s this fall in support of Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin. Through October 9, customers can “round up” their total to the nearest dollar, with the change benefiting the local non-profit. The proceeds from sales of Sendik’s Real Food magazine are also donated to the charity. The magazines are available through October.
“Partnering with Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin to provide school supplies through our Backpack Buddies program is my favorite campaign of the year,” said Margaret Harris of Sendik’s. “As a former grade school teacher, I know the importance of having the tools for a successful school year. Our Sendiks team is very proud to help the children in our community have a productive school year.”
