It took me a month or so of agonizing and painful withdrawal, but I am finally over the sad and sorry fact that cherries have gone out of season. I recognize that there are worse things in life to be hooked on (Breaking Bad, anyone?), but I seriously had a four pound per week Hood River Cherry thing going there for a while this summer. Four pounds a week might be a conservative estimate, actually. I was pretty bummed by the onset of fall when the cherries disappeared for good until next July.
We have several days of school under our belts by now and so far things are under control. The drama and tears (mine) have been kept to a minimum, though I am terribly sad that the carefree days of summer are gone. We’re down to the brass tacks of long practices after school and backpacks weighed down with loads Read more
I’m an absolute junkie when it comes to Pinterest. Not sure I’ve mentioned it here before, but I’m crazy about it. It’s a really, really fun way to kill time and learn to about cool stuff and there’s something for darned near everyone. Seriously … everyone. For instance, pretend for a second that you’re say … a basket weaving enthusiast. You adore all things basket woven – from hair braids to buttercream frosting, to hand knit blankets, or potholders, or throw rugs. Guess what? You can find each and every one of those basket woven things (and more, I checked) on Pinterest. It’s amazing. Truly.
This week, I’m discussing my habits with you here — Tuesday it was my pizza issue. Today, it’s mangoes. The DamFam fights over mangoes the same way we do about greasy cartons of Chinese food leftovers. I guess there are worse things to fight about. So when mangoes go on sale, like they are this week, I stock up. I bring them Read more
It’s that time of year again. My skin is casting an orangy hue – and not ‘cause I’ve been in to the cheap self-tanning cream. Nope…if you see me ‘round town and wonder why I’ve got the pallor of a bambino who’s been dished up one too many jars of strained squash and carrot puree, you’ll know why.
Forget about Toll House, they’re old hat! You’ve got to try these amazing cookies, they’re the hands down favorite of the whole DamFam!
Now, I’m not that much in to sweets – I like ‘em okay, but I’d much prefer salty snacks to their sugary counterparts. But these cookies are a serious guilty pleasure of mine. When they’re hanging around, staring me down from their spot on the cooling rack, lookin’ all innocent and whatnot, I simply cannot be held responsible for my actions. That’s why I made up a system to keep myself honest. I make up a huge recipe of dough, and divide it into thirds. I bake a small batch of cookies for my twerps, then freeze the remaining dough for a rainy day.
Oh, the joys of brown-bagging it. Even though the food selections have gotten much better now that my daughter’s in middle school, she is still not much of a hot lunch fan. When pressed (like when our fridge is void of deli meat and the pantry holds no bread), she’ll grudgingly settle for the cafeteria’s salad bar.
