2016 Angels and Cowboys
Sonoma County Red Blend
Angels and Cowboys is the Sonoma focused wine project from one of our favorite value producers; Cannonball. The winery was founded with the intention of making wines that are fun, uninhibited and approachable. Many wineries set out with this intention but often fall short because they do not have the right winemaking experience to piece it all together. When Angels and Cowboys started the first thing they did was hire a winemaker with a ton of wide experience; Dennis Hill. Dennis Hill has been making wine for 40+ years honing his skills at Seghesio, Alexander Valley Vineyards (in Sonoma) and Hayman & Hill. He then went on to produce the wildly successful Blackstone Merlot giving him a very wide range of experience.
He brought his experience to bear on their first blend, Angels and Cowboys Red Blend. He used a number of different Sonoma County growing regions to source the fruit for this blend: from the subtleties of Carneros, to the distinction of Sonoma Valley, from the refinement of the Russian River Valley, and finally to the abundance of flavor found in the Dry Creek and Alexander Valleys. The 2016 vintage in Sonoma experienced a slightly extended growing period developing profound depth of flavors, gorgeous color, and resolving tannins prior to harvest.
Every single small lot was vinified separately for the first year, so when Dennis starts to blend, the product is already mature. He then takes opulent Zinfandel as the base, weaving in dimensions from complimentary varieties and regions. The final blend goes into French Oak to develop baking-spice complexity. We think the wine turned out beautifully, with plenty of fruit-forward lushness(but not over-the-top), combined with some great complexity. Leading European Wine Publication, Decanter, agreed and awarded this blend with an incredible review
